Business Communications Assignment #3

Reactions to mock Interviews in class

Last Monday, as a class, we paired up and did mock interviews during class.  There were two positions that you could be obviously, the interviewer or the interviewee. Of course, I would have to be the interviewee or job seeker as our teacher told us.

We came to a conclusion that I would be a salesman working for Lexus,  which I didn't think that it would be hard to do actually.  I came across some questions that I didn't really know, and it came to me that I really should think about some of these questions before I go into the interview.  Here are some general questions that you should think of:

- What is your biggest accomplishment/failure?

- What did you dislike about your previous job?

- What is your greatest strength/weakness?

- Name a situation where you had to organize a group of people.

- How would you describe yourself?

Some of theses questions are quite easy to answer but some take a little bit of thought, and for me I can't just come up with things on the fly so I need to create and plan what I should say if they ask a question like that.

When I asked a student in class about what they thought about the mock interviewing they said, "It was very informative and helpful, and would really help prepare me for the real thing."

Some of the answers were funny along with some of the questions that were asked.   At one of the interviews (for a communications job) the interviewer asked "how many jelly beans does it take to fill up a school bus? It's completely irrelevant, but it works to help break the "ice", if there was any.

So, if you have a job, this blog is not worth your time, well actually, if you're looking for a job this blog really won't help you either.  For homework's sake, I'm just writing what I thought about the interviews.  Signing off,  until next time, remember that on this day (April 13th) 1976 the 2-dollar bill was re-introduced into U.S. Currency.

Business Communications Assignment #2

Cover Letters

When you start a resume you have to start with the cover letter first.  Personally, I don't believe you have to write a cover letter when you send in resume's but that's just an opinion.  So, if you are planning on writing a cover letter, this is what you should think of:

1. Explain why are are sending the resume

2. Tell how you learned about the position opening

3. Convince the reader to look at your resume

4. Call attention to elements of your background experience

5. Reflect attidtude

6. Provide referrals (if required, there's no need to send them if they're not required)

7. Indicate how and when you will get in touch with the company that you're applying for

With all of these elements in place, you should definitely keep this within one page, shoot for 3/4 of a page or less.  No one wants to read a book for a cover letter, it's supposed to be an introduction, not an about the author type deal.

Until my next ridiculous assignment, here's a fun fact for you.  The most shoplifted book is the Bible. At least their going to read the thing and be forgiven for stealing it.

Business Communications Assignment #1

The Teaching Process

In my newest blog, I have been assigned by one of my teachers to do write about “how to teach what needs to be taught in college” and the different ways that we should be teaching.

I believe that people have slowly been evolving the way we teach each different generation of students.  Making things easier for each generation, doing less and less homework.  Since I came from a small school, I didn’t have to do much homework, because most of the things that my teachers taught me were general, broad, subjects.

In college, I really learned how to study and get myself together and organized.  Taking a couple hours out of my day, a few days of the week to get my homework done.  In order for people to get their homework and projects done they need to communicate.  When I say communicate, I mean tell either their partners, or themselves that it needs to be done and not put off for later.

Now, do I think that people should change the way they teach subjects in school. Yes and no.  Yes because some of the schools are outdated and sometimes are understaffed.  Why do I say the people shouldn’t change their teaching habits?  It’s been working for hundreds of years and we haven’t really had many problems.  Yeah, sure, online classes work, but how much do you really get out of them? Not real life experience. A person can finish that class in two days if they tried hard enough.

The world is evolving and everything is much faster, but people cannot learn algebra, physics, accounting, or any other major piece of knowledge in days, or months.  It takes years for a person to learn those major things.  This is why Americans have prospered.  They are challenged everyday to do better.  That’s why we should keep forging along the educated path, and keep coming up with new ideas, putting them into textbooks and teach people about them.  Teachers are preparing students for the future. Teachers cannot predict the future, or the jobs of the future.  Teachers could be preparing you for jobs that haven’t even been invented.

Teachers’ jobs are hard enough without trying to predict the future.  If we just keep doing things the way that they should be we’ll be fine and prosper like many other countries.  Until next time, remember to do your homework, it’s the easiest way to get good grades.

Until next time, remember that Carlos Gomez is now a Brewer, so Twins fans can now sleep soundly.
